The Beauty of Sardinia Tour

October 4 to October 14, 2026

This tour is designed for travelers who want to learn about Sardinia’s traditional arts  — including handweaving — and cultural traditions, see historic, prehistoric, and sacred spots, and enjoy Sardinia’s beauty, including sea, mountains, little-known spots, and well-known landmarks. Weather permitting, we’ll take a boat excursion to tour a magnificent cavern or other point of natural beauty.

Key Differences Between May and October tours:
•  May – We spend more time with handweavers, in textile-related museums, and on textile-related adventures. We also visit natural, historic, and sacred spaces of the island.
•  October – We visit the handweavers, yet spend less time on textile-related adventures and more time exploring other arts, and cultural, historic, sacred, and natural areas. Weather permitting, this tour may include a short boat excursion and a guided tour of breathtaking natural caverns.

A relaxed island, Sardinia offers time to enjoy diverse experiences, be they planned or synchronistic! We don’t rush, and the itinerary is somewhat flexible to accommodate unplanned opportunities and special events that may come our way.

We sleep at least two nights at each hotel/agriturismo we visit, and make day trips so you can get to know the locale. The time we spend in the van for day trips varies from about 30 minutes to 2.5 hours, with breaks. On two of the days when we change locations and hotels, we’ll spend up to 3.5-4 hours in the van, with breaks for visits, meals, coffee, and fun. The group is small: 10-12 guests, plus me, a co-host, and a driver or two for our van(s).

On this tour, you can look forward to the following:

  • Visit 3-4 artists, including handweavers, and see demonstrations of their techniques, style, and art, and/or participate in 1-2 hands-on workshops or classes.
  • Explore historic, prehistoric, and sacred sites from several different time periods and cultures.
  • Tour several cultural and arts museums renowned for their ethnographic displays and traditional artistic collections.
  • Explore historic city centers that are centuries old — or older.
  • Stretch your legs walking in nature along old pathways, beaches, and parks with relatively flat terrain.
  • Enjoy relaxing time at beautiful beaches and natural mineral hot springs.
  • Weather permitting, experience a short boat excursion and tour a magnificent cavern or other point of natural beauty.
  • Savor Sardinia’s unique mix of nature and simple elegance at an agriturismo (country estate that’s a working farm with restaurant and guest accommodations) that produces its own food and wine, where you’ll enjoy dinners rich in local flavor and tradition along with some of the most exquisite views in Sardinia.
  • Relax and imbibe Sardinia’s beauty from air-conditioned vans (Mercedes Sprinter, Iveco Daily, or similar) as expert drivers transport us from place to place on the island.
  • Stay in hotels and agriturismi that are clean, comfortable, well-equipped, safe, and relatively upscale. Rooms are double-accommodation, with limited single accommodation at additional cost.
  • Dine well with all breakfasts (buffets), lunches (some picnic-style), and dinners (emphasizing traditional cuisine and local flavors) provided during the tour, along with Italian-style coffee, snacks, and water.

About 7-10 days before the tour, I will host a 1-hour Zoom call for registered tour guests to answer last-minute pre-trip questions.

This is an overview of what to expect. Exact itineraries vary from tour to tour.

Considerations

Please note that traveling in Sardinia is not for everyone. Guests must be in good health and be able to walk a quarter mile/several blocks on uneven surfaces (such as cobblestones, dirt paths, or sand), stand during museum tours and artist studio visits, climb several flights of stairs, and carry their own suitcase and bags. The tour will cross different elevations, with temperatures that generally range from 45°F to 90°F during the time of our visit. Bathrooms, air conditioning, food, and hotels generally differ from what’s typical in the United States. Due to Sardinia’s traditional culinary traditions and the remoteness of some areas we’ll visit, there are limited options for special diets, and the tour cannot accommodate special dietary needs. Ingredients are generally listed on menus. At venues, guests may request a “no meat”, “no pork“, or “no xxx” dish, but these options may not be available and are not guaranteed.

Before confirming tour reservations, I’ll talk with each guest to ensure this tour is the right fit for you!

Supporting Artists

Out of respect for the handweavers and other artists we visit, all of whom earn their living selling their art (not giving demonstrations), we ask that each tour member set aside funds to purchase items directly from the artists. Purchasing directly from the artists also imparts meaning and memory into a unique acquisition you’ll likely treasure for years.

See the Agreement of Understanding for more information about these and other tour considerations.

Questions? Still Deciding? Attend an Information Session

If you would like to attend one of the tour information and Q&A sessions, see Information Sessions and Presentations. Of course, there’s no obligation or cost to attend the Q&A sessions.
